Sakti3 was founded in 2012 by Michigan University professor Anne Marie Sastry, pictured with President Barack Obama at a White House Demo Day for entrepreneurs.

Sakti3 was backed by GMVentures and Khosla Ventures among others and Dyson bought a$15 million stake in March 2015. In October 2015 he bought out all the other investors.

All the Sakti3 employees were retained with Sastry staying on as president,

Sastry saw that the energy density of Li-ion batteries could be improved by a factor of 2-3 by replacing the liquid electrolyte with a thin film of solid material.

The company says it has made a battery with an energy density of 1143Wh/liter.
